Tri-x (I like it, sort of)

Well, here is some tri-x at 1600 developed 18:30 in fresh xtol diluted 1:1.
I like it, but delta may be better, im not sure.. I think delta has more lattitude certainly… and takes far less time to develop, and is much more fine grain… But exposing with the leica is still tricky for me… its hard to know how much of the scene the leica’s “white dot” is metering.
Photo was taken at Jorja’s party a while ago.. CONTRAST… nice, but not always nice.

Here are some train shots. Nice focusing, not really!

She moved and blurred it

Heres another from Jorja’s party.  1 second exposure, of people running like ghosts.

here is another shoe shot…. I have many of these.

Here is some 1600 hipshot in daylight. f 8 at 1/1000th. I had everything from 10 to 25 feet in focus and clicked. Crazy tones

Christ! This next frame is magic. That is mister Blomeley holding a sign that says ‘10L’. More like ‘LOL’. if you interpret it as such and examine the faces that is myschool in a nutshell. Great school, lol.

More LOLs (said with irony as we all know there’s nothing funny about penis jokes)

now onto trix at 400: Pretty boring roll

Here are Lia and Anna playing singstar at party. Who’d have thought shed move and blur it with a 1/4 second exposure?

Andrew asked if i could make high art out of that balloon face. To which i replied “no, but I’ll have a sweet balloon face photo”
Totally SWEET

Chocolate fountain. I will not comment on whether or not I was at a girly slumber party.

Here’s some Des (aka Ben) He had a sweet beard for about a week but he shaved it due to pressure from certain teachers (Mister More-Ottus and Miss Portfolio – names changed slightly to protect the guilty). Compare the following two photos
Ben’s beard, bad photo as i had to guess focus but a nice illustration of the beard.

Now compare to the following image.

Both excellent beards.

Here is some traditional Des and Securapark.

Now here is Des and Matt, shooting through a black curtain. Cool effect sort of.

Now to continue tradition of ending the blog with a boring photo.

loved this post, really did. the 1600 looked great, and i almost reconsider my stance on the cron :)

It says ‘Here is Matt’ when people could interpret either Frodo or I as being the subject of the photo. This is fallacious!

Regarding the m6 metering, take a look at the dot with respect to the size of the curtain. When metering, the area of sensitivity will be same same size within the framelines of whichever focal length you are using.

The meter will ask for the exposure which will result in an average of 18% grey within that dot.

If you want to try a technique to be more consistent with your exposure try this… You can get a grey card to hold infront of your camera to meter off – the idea is to have the card within the same light that the subject you are metering for will be in. Or you can do this (because grey cards are a bit cumbersome) hold your hand out in the light that you want to meter for and meter off of your palm, then add between 1/2 to 2/3 of a stop to your exposure. This is because your palm is not 18% grey.

Also, don’t forget that what you see in the VF is not precisely what the lens sees, especially at an arms length, so you need to shift it a bit to get your palm in the center of the frame.

    Dersunde:
Yeah I’ve been doing all that. The problem lies in just not knowing the camera well enough yet, the ways of thinking are not yet fluid. Re: white dot. In the manual it says that it is different size in relation to the entire field of view depending on what focal length you use. Seems a bit counter intuitive, seeing as it gets light THROUGH THE LENS.. Maybe i read it wrong :P

i’m not happy with trix pushed in xtol myself, however, i’m not a big fan of delta400 (and ilford in general) but i highly doubt that delta400 pushes “better” than trix. guess, somethings wrong with your negative development workflow. also, did you print those negs? maybe your scanner favors delta? anyway, shoot the film that suits you. heh.

Bernhard. Im using the canoscan, i remember you said you use it, i think anyway. You should try pushing delta 400 if you don’t believe me. I did it in ilford DDX. When compared to trix it is awesome. Maybe not artistically, but it has tones galore.
Haven’t printed for ages, but I was in DR the other day, doing complicated test strips and exposure notes in preparation for printing.
Anyway, my other friends who have scanned trix on the 8400f have said it lacks shadows too, so maybe it is partly the scanner.
    Thanks for comment
