Woah. Here’s a little story I gots to tell that started WELL back in november on one of those lazy sunny days hanging by the creek with THE girls:

There was a protest against global warming innaction. Nice way to waste a day shooting in conditions that never really make great shots.

Didn’t shoot much in the airports because well.. They are airports. I don’t like them, I don’t want to remember them…. Then again having a camera makes you cool so I probably made some random frames that don’t deserve posting.

So after getting there and meeting my host family I think we spent the first day at the wild and brutal beach of Bretagne. I can’t remember what it’s called (it was a long time ago).

I must’ve been a little photo shy as all i can find are these photos of Carla. And tots are the easiest to photograph

This is one of the rare photos from inside the school ground. I wasn’t big with photos there cos it’s school and i don’t ever take photos at school here.

The town i found to be quite beautiful in places. With heaps of streets to explore. Landerneau it’s called.

This crane was there the ENTIRE two months, never did work out what it did. Modern art?

I only allow myself to waste shots by shooting drinks and food and stuff because i know that a general high shooting rate means more chance of something good in general and it gives me something to do.

Now I spent a little time in Paris actually…. Just a few days but a nice few days.
Longish (4-6 hours) train ride to get there though.

I started off shooting some sweet sweet provia 100. I changed pretty quickly though because I wanted to use black and white.

This stuff is mainly about the light i suppose.

Somebody lost a little dog! Oh noes! Seriously, there are so many little dogs in Paris I think they haven’t a hope in hell…

reflection shots are a classic.

Okay so after 10 shots or so “screw this” and i changed to black and white. Because you HAVE to use BW to be a REAL artist. DIdn’t you realise?
This is just the corner of the street on which i stayed. Nothing interesting.

This must have been the first day. Light gets like this as the sun sets, but it allowed me to make a photo just for the LULZ.

More of that sorta light.

Apparently this man was interested in books.

Meanwhile i was interested in uberinteresting streets.

And HSBC’s effects on the proletariat.

and just how poor i can get the tones from my scanner to look. (mustve been underexposed anyway i think…)

But i was also interested in people.

U.S.A – Part 1 LA

So anyway I went to the USA and came back with a few rolls and a camera to repair…
Stupid Camera.

We started off in LA, we were stayin on manhattan beach. I didnt really take many photos as i was beaching it up and i didn’t fancy scraping sand out of my camera.
But there are a few from the beach eh. I tried drive by shooting. It’s hard.

See everyone rides these lowrider bikes along the strand. It is like a stereotypical beach in jaws or something there are beach volleyballers everywhere and so on.

There is of course the city aswell. These are some touristy places right here…

This was taken out a car window. Cross-proccessing-esque.

Disney Land. The magic kindom, word. Very cool, I shot about a roll here but i only wanna show a couple as the place was realy bright and high asss contrast so i dont like most of the photos, people’s faces are shadowed.

Get outa my frame forground kid. Seriously, go home.

Man. SWIIISH. These guys had a family tour 07 t shirt with all their faces on it. I wanted one, but like, in their family…

I head to the USA tomorrow so i will be offline for 2 weeks or so i guess figured i would leave this before i go. This is pretty minimal with one shot often to illustrate events.
NEOPAN 400:
Just taking some photos on the train..

We made a film for some competition through school. This is a BTS shot. Jake (suspenders) had to walk at a ridiculously slow pace so when sped up he was walking normally while others zoomed by. Unfortunately he doesn’t look slow in this photo.

Now here is the big news.. I got a 35mm lens. I love it, i really love it. It hightlights all the failings of my summicron DR. Here is the ritualistic first self portrait… THe lens is the voigtlander 35 1.7

The day i got it i went to a movie with ben and stayed at his place for school the next morning.

The next day i met some people i don’t really know in the city. They turned out to be top people.

That night we had a guy’s night at K-Karls.

THis next shot i have a big fibre of that looks so much better. But I like the shot…

This is taken with the flare proof 35 as compared to the flare loving 50.

Also, i was recruited to shoot the junior social. Bloody hillarious night For reasons i won’t post on the internet. Bloody hillarious.

Weird (Senior social plus some other crap)

This post will be a weird mix, here’s the other crap first, social is at the bottom. The black and white is all neopan 400 at 1600, so far VERY impressed with that.
Jake’s super-awesome GF doing some stupid dance we got her to do. This was during the musical, I was pretty busy so I don’t have too many shots.

Jane, super awesome top best girl in world. Snuck a photo. Jane is one with glasses. Matt’s big bulky nose in frame. DAMN.

Before after party. Sitting down in front of teachers, some were less than subtle about the future course of the night.

Anyway we left after that for the station. There were more than a hundred of us, I’m not pleased with this photo, doesn’t show full size of group, plus there’s the white line that looks like a scratch but isn’t.

Yeah I photographed the senior social for school mag. Was cool, they do this thing where they blast the strobes explained later. I change font colour for no reason.
Okay so here are some atmosphere shots.

1 second exposure and they flashed the strobes a few times

In fact, I think I might not put too many portraits here, just some dancefloor/funny shots.

Lot’s of the dance floor shots, in fact all I think, were made using 1/4 second exposures, but most have no motion blur (not including last one) because the sensor only gets exposed for like 1/125th of a second when they flash the strobe. In the rest of the exposure time the dance floor is VERY dark, with some coloured lights occasionally

I reckon this girl was trés cute. Good dancer aussi.

Yes, things got hot and heavy. theres another photo a half second after this that looks normal.

I was usng a pentax istD with a 28 2.8. I was very pleased with the combo, good size cam, and pretty low noise at 800 for it’s pricerange, pity i have to give back to school.

Was cool, you can take photos like this far away from people but they don’t notice. Poor framing here.

Thick Negs.

I’ve been shooting more black and white and i wish for once i could get some developing right. I always seem to have random porblems. This time it was with neopan 400 (which i will discuss later) while some shots were okay, many had weird black dots that didnt look like light leaks, ruining many shots. Anyway, I’ve now gone through my workflow and quality assured everything, my next rolls should be fine, and its worth using a little more fixer (ie less re-using) or whatever in order to get absolute consistency and no weird inexplicable fuck ups.
Onto neopan, I love it. I think im just not a trix guy, too thin. I love the thickness of delta and neopan and plusx. Despite weird streaks etc, neopan was well exposed with consistent tones and nice grain and nice lattitude.
Here is will with his new jumper. The hood zips up to create the effect. You see the streaks if you look.

More will. Obvious streaks. His face is behind a pineapple.

On another note, it’s worth reading about the treatment of war veterans in the USA. Being born there I like to follow what’s going on and after reading some articles, the situation seems abhorrent to me.

Tri-x (I like it, sort of)

Well, here is some tri-x at 1600 developed 18:30 in fresh xtol diluted 1:1.
I like it, but delta may be better, im not sure.. I think delta has more lattitude certainly… and takes far less time to develop, and is much more fine grain… But exposing with the leica is still tricky for me… its hard to know how much of the scene the leica’s “white dot” is metering.
Photo was taken at Jorja’s party a while ago.. CONTRAST… nice, but not always nice.

Here is some 1600 hipshot in daylight. f 8 at 1/1000th. I had everything from 10 to 25 feet in focus and clicked. Crazy tones

Crap

Most of this is crap, i have had a crap last 4 rolls, and it is reflected in the photos. Here are my problems:
- My developer xtol was screwed meaning i had some fun negs where it went:
Highlights (not bad)
Midtones(too dark)
Shadows (all black, not any detail at all, black faces)
FUN
- One roll got crunched by a spoool, youll see an example shot
- My lens flares like a bitch, to the point wheere i wanna swap
Anyway, all solvable… and i WILL SOLVE THEM

Heres a shot that was actually decent.
In a, i framed it too high and am no that good focusing a rangefinder yet kinda way

YUM, sunny and overcontrasty, with no focal point because it was sunny and i was shooting at f16 at 1000 of a second.

Believe it or not this was xtol developed trix that exhibited lots of shadow detail compared to my other stuff–>

here i remembered i have a wacom tablet. the rest speaks for itself. Photographers have interesting lives as shown in the image

ABOUT ABOVE IMAGE: real reason i took that was to test if my meter was off, i developed in lc 29 and it aint my meter, its the xtol.
Next image – InDIe CHicKs do it with holgas. I shouldnt diss holgas they are very cool cameras, affordable medium format! And I shouldnt diss this girl, anyone who shoots street is okay with me i guess. Anyway, later on, the very mean spirited will was laughing at this girl as she nearly botched her film (from afar). 1 week

Well.
As a highly esteemed year 11, I get a week off school to go on camp with the lil yr 9s. There are 3 white kids in the form im taking. The rest are asian/indian.
Anyway, as such i wont be updating till next weekend. But you can expect some colour, and black and white, usual street stuff.
I was sick yesterday, st patricks day of all days.
Anyway, the real point of this is to pay my respects to the ‘nicest guy in rock and roll.’ As some may know, Brad Delp passed away on March 9. It’s horrible, and I think he deserves a little respect.
RIP Brad Delp.
